How We Secured a Multi-Building Construction Site in Ilderton, Ontario
Without Running Cable Between Buildings
Construction sites are one of the most challenging environments to secure. You've got high-value equipment scattered across a large property, constant vehicle traffic coming and going, and in many cases — multiple buildings spread across a site that wasn't designed with cameras in mind. That's exactly the situation we walked into on a recent project in Ilderton, Ontario, just north of London.
Here's how we solved it.
The Challenge
Our client operates a busy construction company with a large, multi-building property in Ilderton. Vehicles — trucks, equipment trailers, and supplier deliveries — were coming and going throughout the day with no way to track or document them. Construction materials and equipment stored in the yard and warehouse had zero camera coverage, creating real exposure to theft and liability.
The property itself presented a significant technical challenge: multiple separate buildings spread across an extensive site, with limited existing infrastructure and areas where running new cabling simply wasn't practical. A standard camera installation — running cable from a central NVR to every camera — would have required trenching between buildings, significant disruption to an active work site, and a much larger budget.
We needed a smarter approach.
Our Solution
Rather than starting from scratch, we designed a retrofit solution that worked with what was already there. Where existing cabling and infrastructure could be leveraged, we used it. Where new cable runs weren't feasible — tight spaces, areas of the site where trenching would have disrupted operations — we deployed PoE (Power over Ethernet) powered switches locally, allowing us to add cameras without running lengthy cable back to a central location.
The biggest challenge was bridging the separate buildings together. Rather than trenching conduit between structures across an active construction yard, we installed point-to-point wireless radios on each building. These radios create a dedicated, high-bandwidth wireless link between buildings — effectively connecting them to the same network as if they were wired together, without a single cable in the ground between them. The result was a unified, fully connected 8-camera UniFi Protect system spanning the entire property — all managed from one interface, all viewable from any device.
The Technology: UniFi Protect
For commercial security camera installations like this one, we rely heavily on UniFi Protect by Ubiquiti. It's an enterprise-grade platform that delivers features you'd normally only see in much more expensive systems:
License Plate Detection — UniFi Protect's built-in licence plate detection automatically reads and logs every vehicle entering and leaving the property. For our client, this meant a permanent, searchable record of every truck and trailer that came through the gate — without anyone having to manually review footage.
4K Resolution with Smart Detection — high-definition coverage that distinguishes people from vehicles, reducing false alerts and making it easy to find the footage you're actually looking for.
No Monthly Fees — unlike consumer systems, UniFi Protect stores footage locally on a network video recorder. No cloud subscription. No ongoing storage costs. The client owns the system and the footage.
Remote Access — the client can view all 8 cameras live from their phone or any browser, from anywhere.
The Result
Two technicians. Two days. An approximately $10,000 investment that gave a busy Ilderton construction company something they didn't have before: complete visibility over their entire property. Every vehicle entering and leaving is now automatically logged with licence plate data. Every corner of the yard and warehouse is covered. And the entire system runs on a unified network that bridges all buildings together — with no trenches dug and no disruption to an active work site.
